SPANISH / ENGLISH / FRENCH PROVERBS & SAYINGS

I often think that it is very very  interesting to find so many Spanish proverbs which  have a similar one in English. And that is why I took the trouble to bring up some of them together, and try to compare them with each other. Hope you like them.

1)   All cats are grey in the dark                

      De noche, todos los gatos son pardos.

     La Nuit, tous les chats sont gris

 

2)   All that glitters is not gold.

     No es oro todo lo que reluce.

     Tout ce qui brille n'est pas or

3)   All's well that ends well.

      Bien está lo que bien acaba.

     Tout est bien qui finit bien

4)  All is fair in love and war.

     En el amor y en la guerra todo vale.

    En amour comme à la guerre tous les coups sont permis

5) April showers bring may flowers. or : A dry March, a wet April and a cool May, fill barn and cellar and bring much hay.

    Marzo ventoso y abril lluvioso, hacen un mayo florido y hermoso.

   Après la pluie vient le beau temps

6)  A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

      Más vale pájaro en mano que ciento volando.

      Un tiens vaut mieux que deux tu l'auras (Il vaut mieux tenir que courir)

7)  A burden of one's own choice is not felt.

     Sarna con gusto no pica

     Pour être belle il faut souffrir.

 8)   A bad beginning makes a bad ending.

        Quien mal empieza, mal acaba.

        Qui sème le vent, récolte la tempête

 9)  A man is known by the company he keeps.

       Díme con quien andas, y te diré quién eres.

       Dis-moi qui tu fréquentes, je te dirai qui tu es

10)   A monkey in silk is a monkey no less.

         Aunque la mona se vista de seda, mona se queda.

         L'habit ne fait pas le moine

       

11)   A rotten apple spoils the barrel.

        Una manzana podrida, daña el barril completo.

        Une pomme pourrie gâte le baril- (traduction)

12)   A swallow does not make the Summer.

        Una golondrina no hace verano.

        Une hirondelle ne fait pas le printemps

13)   After dinner rest a while, after supper walk a mile. (I have this one in latin, as

        Post cibum dormire; post cenam mile pasos ire.  ( per my father's version)

       Après le diner, le repos d'un moment, après le souper, long parcours- (trad.)

 

14)  Better be alone than in bad company.

        Más vale sólo que mal acompañado.

        Mieux vaut être seul que mal accompagné

15)  Better late than never

        Más vale tarde que nunca.

       Mieux vaut tard que jamais

16)  Birds of a feather flock together.

        Dios los cría y ellos se juntan.

       Qui se ressemble s'assemble

17)  Clothes don't make the man.

        Las apariencias engañan.

        Les apparences sont souvent trompeuses

 

18)  Experience is the father of wisdom.

        La experiencia es la madre de la ciencia.

        Prudence est mère de sûreté

19)  Familiarity breeds contempt.

       Donde hay confianza da asco

       Familiarité engendre le mépris

20)  He who plays with fire gets burnt.

       El que juega con fuego, se quema.

      A force de jouer avec le feu on finit par se brûler

21) He laughs best who laughs last.

        Quien ríe el último, ríe mejor.

        Rira bien qui rira le dernier

22) In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

       En tierra de ciegos, el tuerto es rey.

       Au royaume des aveugles, les borgnes sont rois

 23)  Kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

        Matar las gallinas de los huevos de oro.

       Tuer la poule aux oeufs d'or

24) Man proposes, God disposes.

      El hombre propone y Dios dispone.

      L'homme propose et dieu dispose

25)  Never put off till tomorrow what can be done today.

        No dejes para mañana, lo que puedas hacer hoy.

        Ne remets au lendemain ce que tu peux faire le jour même

26)  Prevention is better than cure.

        Más vale prevenir que curar.

       Mieux vaut prévenir que guérir

27)  The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

        El infierno está lleno de buenas intenciones.

       L'enfer est pavé de bonnes intentions

28) Time is Money.

       El tiempo es oro.

      Le temps, c'est de l'argent

29) Too many cooks spoil the broth.

        Muchas manos estropean el cocido.

        Trop de cuisiniers gâtent le bouillon- (traduction)

30)  Walls have ears.

        Las paredes oyen.

       Les murs ont des oreilles

31)  What the eye doesn't see, the heart doesn't grieve.

       Ojos que no ven, corazón que no siente.

      Loin des yeux, loin du coeur

32)   Where there is life, there is hope.  

           Mientras hay vida, hay esperanza.

           Tant qu'il y a de la vie, il y a de l'espoir

 

33)   Wisdom is better than strength.

             Más vale maña que fuerza.

             Adresse passe force

34)   A cat in gloves, catches no mice.

           Gato con guantes, no caza.

           Chat ganté ne prit jamais souris- (traduction)

 
35)   A closed mouth catches no flies.

         En boca cerrada no entran moscas.

          En bouche close n'entre mouche
